Communism fell in Europe in the fall of 1989. People from all parts
of the world and all walks of life flooded Eastern Europe, including
Bulgaria. Since the majority of these people cannot speak the Bulgarian
language, there quickly arose a need to start a church using the
English language since that is what most of these visitors understand.
Dr. Bill and Mrs. June Wardlaw came from Japan to Bulgaria in 1992
to work with the Bulgarian Baptist Union. Dr. Wardlaw quickly realized
the need for an English-speaking church in Sofia and started holding
services in his apartment. A short time later Dr. Theo Angelov,
President of the Bulgarian Baptist Union, contacted Dr. John Merritt,
General Secretary of the European Baptist Convention in Wiesbaden,
Germany about starting an English-speaking church in Sofia.
In May 1992, Harold and Ruth Bryson from Richardson Heights Baptist
Church in Richardson, Texas, came to Sofia. Immediately after they
arrived, they began meeting with the English-speaking community
and holding worship services at the Hotel Vitosha. Throughout the
summer of 1992, more people came to worship and the IBCS was born.
Around the middle of August 1992, the Brysons returned to the United
States and the work continued under the leadership of Jim and Phyllis
Whetstine from USA and Dr. Parush Parushev from Sofia.
On October 25, 1992, Pastor Charles Currie came from Tennessee and
worked with the IBCS until a full-time pastor could be called. He
began a Sunday School class the first Sunday of November and brought
some practical structure to the church. Harold and Marilyn Stephens
from California were early partners in the church. Marilyn started
Children's Sunday School, which continues to this day during the
worship hour. These early steps were very positive and have proved
to have long-term benefits to the church.
